A FIRM of solicitors is urging people to make a will.
A FIRM of solicitors is urging people to make a will.
Stamford legal firm Buckles Solicitors LLP, in St Mary's Hill, is advising people to make a will no matter what their age.
Wills and probate specialist at the firm Sarah Westwood says a husband or wife would be entitled to only the first £125,000 of the value of the property, with the rest held in a trust, if a will had not been made.
She said: "While this consequence of dying without a will has existed for years, it has only been a real problem for the last decade due to ever-increasing house prices.
"In the early 90s, a reasonable two bedroom property cost about £49,000 and the £125,000 limit would no doubt have been perfectly adequate. The situation now is obviously very different.
"It is even worse if you are not married and do not have a will as your partner would get nothing irrespective of how long you have lived together and whether or not you have children.
"There is no more important time to make a will than now."
