A LEGAL firm has spoken about the exploitation of migrant workers following revelations that one worker was paid just £8.80 for a 39-hour week.
Employment lawyer Philip Hyland, a partner in Stamford-based PJH Law, says the company's research shows excessive deductions from migrant workers' payslips are widespread.
He was speaking after it was revealed that a Lithuanian man working on the construction of a £600m NHS Hospital in Nottinghamshire had taken home only £8.80 for a 39-hour week.
Mr Hyland confirmed that his firm had been approached by about 100 Polish workers last year and only one was being paid correctly.
He said: "The Poles were anxious to know what were their employment rights but the language barrier and an unwillingness to challenge authority meant that they were unwilling to do anything about apparent abuses."
None of the men who contacted the firm were working for Stamford companies.
