THE sounds, tastes and culture of Southern America are being imported to a former Stamford restaurant being relaunched as a New Orleans bar this weekend.
Mama Liz's Soul Food Shack, in North Street, will throw open its doors for a private pre-launch today, before holding a grand public unveiling tomorrow. It promises to stock hard-to-find beers and provide blues, soul and jazz.
The transformed venue, which was previously home to Thai diner Sawadee, is the brainchild of former Mi Familia workers Pat Juggins, Liz Bullimore and Dan Dawson, along with Mike Houlihan.
Former bartender Mr Juggins, 35, is excited about the prospects of Mama Liz's. He said: "We're looking to sell premium products and we believe we offer somewhere totally different for people to go in Stamford."
The three-floor bar will eventually open a basement section likely to host live music and comedy, while the top floor will function as a cajun restaurant, selling food such as catfish goujons, vegetable gumbo and spicy chicken wings.
The bar is named after Liz Bullimore and Pat, Dan and Mike say she is like a surrogate mother.
The taster evening open to everyone will start at 6pm on tomorrow, while blues band Steel Union will be appearing at 8pm on Sunday.
