LINCOLNSHIRE County Council's recycling officer Kenton Vigus has praised keen homeowners for meeting waste targets two years ahead of schedule.
Figures show that 40 per cent of the waste produced in Lincolnshire was sent for recycling last year and Mr Vigus hopes this will rise to half by the end of 2008.
Nationally counties are expected to reuse 40 per cent of their rubbish by 2010.
Mr Vigus has advised people to ensure items put into recycling are clean as contamination can spoil a batch of recycled aluminium.
He said: "We have come a long way in a short space of time. Only three or four years ago recycling was less than 20 per cent; now we are pushing towards half of our waste being recycled.
"Lincolnshire people are dead keen to recycle. They know how important is to be sustainable with all things."
The county council launched a home composter campaign this week aimed at encouraging people to cut the amount of rubbish sent for landfill.
Residents can put grass cuttings, cardboard, vegetable peelings and twigs into the composters, made from recycled plastic, but are advised not to put in meat or cooked food.
Composters are available priced at £8 from 0845 077 0757 or go to
