A PRIMARY school is celebrating becoming an eco-school.
A bronze award has been given to Bourne Abbey Primary School, which has proved it is doing its bit for the environment.

To achieve the award, given by environmental charity Encams, the school has set up environmental gardens funded by the Rotary Club of Bourne St Peter. Plans include new seating, an auditorium-style outside theatre, animal habitats and sensory planting. The parents, teachers and friends association is also considering funding for composting and fruit recycling bins.

The children themselves are responsible for recycling, youngsters in the nursery are composting and looking after a vegetable patch and Year 2 and 4 pupils are members of gardening clubs. An environmental club has also made bird feeders, created a green action plan and is working to develop an eco-code for the school.

Marie Green, leader of the enviornmental club, said: "At Bourne Abbey we have become more environmental aware and have introduced several new initiatives and the pupils are reaping the rewards. We are exceptionally proud of the way pupils have embarked on these projects and look forward to making our school even greener in the future."

The eco-schools scheme is a nationwide initiative to help schools develop environmental awareness and celebrate their achievements.
