Green letter: Reducing carbon footprint
When we moved to Stamford a little under two years ago, we aimed to reduce the carbon footprint from our house (60s detached, with double glazing) as much as possible.
We started in the loft, doubling the thickness of insulation and boarding it, which gives extra storage too.
Then cavity wall insulation, to further reduce the need for heating.
Next we had solar panels fitted, to provide hot water (not electricity) summer and winter. All of these reduce our gas consumption.
For electricity, we switched to Good Energy who have 100 per cent renewable generation, so no CO at all.
It costs a bit more, but we reduce consumption by buying energy efficient appliances and not leaving TV etc on standby. And we use mostly low energy light bulbs.
For some of our fittings there don't seem to be suitable bulbs on the market yet, but the range is improving all the time.
