HUNDREDS of people are expected to attend a thanksgiving service in Oakham next week for the lives of a husband, wife and daughter.
HUNDREDS of people are expected to attend a thanksgiving service in Oakham this week for the lives of a husband, wife and daughter.
Former Rutland policeman Toby Day, his wife Sam and daughter Genevieve, six, died following an incident at their home in Melton on December 8. Mr Day is believed to have been responsible for their deaths.
The couple’s surviving children, Kimberley, 15, and Adam, 14, will attend the service at All Saints Church at 2pm on Thursday. The teenagers, who attend Catmose College in Oakham, were both injured in the incident and are now being cared for by family members.
The service follows a private funeral at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Market Overton, last month.
Mr Day left the police force shortly before his death and his wife was a manager at the Early Years Nursery based at Swallowdale Primary School in Melton. Geneveive was a pupil at St Francis Catholic Primary School in the town.
The thanksgiving service will be led by the Rev Canon Lee Francis-Dehqani and a retiring collection will be shared between the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance, The Samaritans, All Saints Church, Oakham, and St Peter and St Paul, Market Overton.
A trust fund has been set up for Kimberley and Adam by the Melton Times with the full support of the Mercury.
The total currently stands at more than £11,700, including £340 raised by pupils at Catmose College.
The fund aims to help the siblings with their future education and give them some financial security.
In a statement their families said: “We are all overwhelmed by everything that is going on to raise money for Kimberley and Adam as well as the love, thoughts, prayers and hugs.
“The community’s response has been deeply moving and we are drawing strength from it.
“It’s wonderful to see how people have taken Kimberley and Adam to their hearts and we are just so grateful.”
