Langtoft 10k Road Race and Fun Run axed after police withdraw support
Organisers of a race which attracts hundreds of runners and has raised thousands of pounds have been forced to cancel this year’s event.
The Langtoft 10k Road Race and Fun Run was due to be held for the 25th time on May 5 but organisers have cancelled it after being told Lincolnshire Police will no longer help marshal it.
In recent years two officers have helped with traffic management to keep runners safe.
However the force says it can no longer help because of resource levels and after legislation changes.
Race chairman Robert Cramp, 72, of Truesdale Gardens, Langtoft, said: “We are all absolutely gutted.
“I have been on the committee for 15 years and we have never had any problem like this.
“We were all looking forward to celebrating our 25th race but now all our plans have been put to the wall.
The race, which started as a challenge between rivals in the east and west of the village, attracted about 200 runners for the 10k and another 250 runners in the fun run.
It usually rauses about £800 for causes including the village church, football club and nursery plus 60 villagers are also give their time to marshal on the day.
Mr Cramp said: “Now all that is gone.”
Race organisers were told to apply for a traffic regulation order from Lincolnshire County Council Highways to close the road but they found out an application may not be processed before their deadline, so decided to cancel.
Lincolnshire Police operational communications officer James Newall said: “In the past the police may have informally managed local events, this is however no longer appropriate, both in terms of legislation changes and our resource levels.
“Event organisers across the county are aware of this and their responsibility is to ensure that the appropriate measures are taken before they host such events.
“The county council and ourselves do work very closely with event organisers to help them achieve these requirements at minimum costs.”
Mr Cramp said the future of the race would be decided at a meeting in September.
