RAF personnel volunteer to help 999 service
Group Capt Richard Hill welcomes Mayor Bob Sandall to the launch event, along with volunteers and paramedics
RAF personnel based at Wittering have set up a first response team to support East Midlands Ambulance Service as volunteer medics.
The group has now completed its first shift as the RAF Wittering Co-Responder Scheme.
There are about 30 volunteers from a variety of backgrounds, including nurses, bomb disposal experts and logisticians.
At their launch event last week, Group Capt Richard Hill, the bases’s commanding officer, said: “We are delighted to participate in such a valuable project. The lifesaving work that these volunteers will be undertaking will undoubtedly make a positive contribution within our local community.”
The volunteers have completed clinical and driving courses at the ambulance service training facility in Lincoln, enabling them to respond to 999 calls throughout Lincolnshire.
During a shift, two members of the team man a rapid response vehicle. On their first shift based at Stamford Ambulance Station the team were sent to help a young man in Stamford suffering a seizure, along with four more emergency calls, two of which required them to provide treatment before an ambulance arrived. Mayor of Stamford Bob Sandall attended a launch event last week, along with East Midlands Ambulance Service director of operations Peter Ripley.
