THOUSANDS of people are preparing to flock to Rutland Water this weekend for one of the country's biggest festivals of birdwatching.
The international Birdfair, hosted by Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and the RSPB, starts today, providing the perfect setting for a whole host of feathered and beaked creatures.
With crowds, including Bill Oddie and Chris Packham, descending into the area for the three-day extravaganza, people will be able to attend lectures, take part in quizzes and see exhibitions.
Organisers are aiming to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for various wildlife causes in the process. Joint organiser Tim Appleton said: "Working together, we are making a difference."
The event will feature more than 100 stands, with goods on sale including books, clothes, food and binoculars.
One stall being promoted is the Wildlife Trust's stand, which features Wader Raiders – a game hosted by TV presenter and naturalist Nick Baker.
The stall has been set up with children and families in mind, offering wildlife-friendly goodies as prizes.
The bird simulation game will see participants try and pick-up rubber worms with chopstick beaks, with the winner being the person who manages to catch the most.
Nick Baker is encouraging people to get stuck into the game, which will be held on Friday, 11am to 1pm, Saturday, 1pm to 3pm and Sunday, 11am to 1pm.
He said: "By joining Wildlife Watch you're in good company. It is vital for children with an interest in the natural world."
Birdfair 2008 takes place from Friday to Sunday at the Anglian Water Birdwatching Centre, on the Egleton Nature Reserve, Rutland Water, 9am to 5.30pm daily.
