TWO FLOWER Festivals can be visited this weekend (June 28th/29th) as well as lots of gardens.
HOLYWELL HALL

The handsome and historically interesting gardens of Holywell Hall are open today from 2-6pm in aid of the National Gardens Scheme. Nestled in a vale, the broad south-facing gardens are on a slope leading down to a l
ake. There are numerous water features, a walled vegetable garden, stunning borders, a chapel, fishing temple, orangery and a wildflower meadow. Adm £3.50, children 50p. Teas and other light refreshments.

UPPINGHAM

Greening Uppingham is the title of an ecologically-themed flower festival – a first for Uppingham Church this weekend. Around £600 worth of flowers have been locally sourced and each of the 22 arrangements is based on a separate concept – from recycling glass to composting. The whole of the south porch is being turned into a biodiversity garden and the whole of the main porch will be decorated with flowers and recyclable materials. Opening hours are 10am-6pm from today until Sunday with teas served in the church hall on the main two days.
Sunday is also a second chance to see Uppingham's Open Gardens – as bad weather prevailed at an earlier opening for the National Gardens Scheme. Several gardens will be open from 2-6pm with tickets for sale in the church hall for £3, accompanied under 16s free. There will also be plant stalls.

GRETTON

St James' Church, Gretton has its 34th annual flower festival this weekend with The Saints as the theme.

Opening hours are today 2-5pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm.

Home-made lunches and teas will be served in the Old School House on both main days and a barbecue will be held on the village green.

Gretton Silver Band will play on Sunday afternoon and there will be stalls around the church path selling cakes, produce and plants, together with a raffle and a tombola. There will be games on the green and you can have your photo taken in the stocks – or throw wet sponges at others.

The festival will end with a church service at 6.30pm on Sunday. A concert in aid of the Bethesda Children's Homes in Goa will be given by the silver band on Tuesday at 7.30pm. Tickets £5 (£3) – 01536 770728.
