...help put the brake on bike thefts.
Just because David Cameron had his bicycle stolen, doesn't mean the rest of us have to fall victim to bike crime.
According to the Home Office, more than 480,000 bicycles are stolen each year, but there are some simple measures you can take to deter would-be thieves.
Firstly, invest in a D-lock for extra security when locking up your bicycle and always make sure you lock the wheel and the frame to the bike stand.
Secondly, don't leave a gap between your bike and the stand when locking it as thieves can use this space to twist the bike free or get better access to the lock.
Also, make sure you lock your bicycle to an immovable object – thieves can remove drainpipes and lift bikes off signposts or bollards, as the Leader of the Opposition found out to his cost.
Try and lock up your bike in a public space, near to a CCTV camera, and avoid isolated or dimly lit places.
When at home, keep you bicycle out of site, locked to an immovable object in your house, a secure garage or shed.
Register your bike's make, model and frame number with www.immobilise.com.
