If you only do one thing this week

…try to eat only locally-grown food. That's the task Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon set themselves in 2005 after discovering that their usual supermarket-bought meals had often travelled more than 1,500 miles to reach their plates.
For one year they bought or grew all their own food from within 100 miles of their flat in Vancouver, Canada, in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint. Now, through their 100 Mile Diet website (www.100mile
diet.org), they're asking you to take the challenge.
Don't worry, you don't have to commit to a whole year, and can sign up for a month, a week or even a single meal. It's a lot harder than it sounds, to be honest, but it's a great way of getting to know the seasons, understanding where our food comes from and discovering local farmers' markets and shops.
You'll have to give up certain luxuries such as bananas, coffee and olives, but you'll enjoy a constantly changing menu due to your new seasonal diet.
You won't be losing many calories, but you'll certainly be shedding some serious food miles.
Check out their website for more details – a number of Brits have signed up already.
