A master craftsman
I was saddened to read of the untimely death of Blair Jeary.
A craftsman of considerable talent, his conservation and book-binding skills will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Last year I took a publisher friend from South Africa to Blair's bindery in the old stable-yard at Burghley House, where he left two rare volumes of a late 18th century publication on South African birds for conservation; a process completed over some five months.
Having advised my friend of Blair's demise, I received the following e-mail this morning:
"What a binder he was. Absolutely the tops. His work has attracted great praise in South Africa where all who've seen the Sparrman books agree there is/was no-one to match him here in Africa. Now where do I find a similar exceptional talent?"
What finer epitaph to one's skills could any craftsman wish?
