Daytime bat caught my eye
On Tuesday, April 22, I was taking my first lunchtime stroll of the year in shirt sleeves.
Enjoying the sunshine, I was walking across the town bridge, when something caught my eye – flying over the water on the Meadows side of the bridge.
At first I thought it was a small bird, but having stopped to look closer, it was a bat!
I watched for about five minutes as it continuously flew around under the bridge and swooped over the water, passing within a few yards of where I was standing. Quite a few other people also stopped to watch its aerobatics.
It's the first time I have ever seen a bat flying in broad daylight/bright sunshine.
Some research on the internet confirmed that it is not unheard of, but is not often seen. The bat in question was slightly smaller than a robin, and would seem to be a pipestrelle bat.
Perhaps – like me – it was enjoying the long over-due spring sunshine following the recent grey and damp weather.
