Re: The proposed salt store in Thurlby. Various people have sent letters and a petition to the relevant authorities, and to our district and county councillors.
These letters stated our objections as follows:
The proposed building will be totally out of keeping with the surrounding area, which is residential, backing on to open fields.
The size of the proposed store will be about twice the width, twice
the length and 30 per cent higher than the height of the houses nearby. It would be extremely visually intrusive, and like having an industrial site near our houses.
There is a great deal of noise when the gritters are being loaded. When this takes place at night it is very detrimental to the wellbeing of residents. Since the introduction of the electric gate, the noise has been increased as the lorries queue to enter and leave the depot.
Daytime activity in this depot has increased over the last few years.
The larger lorries which visit the depot have difficulty in negotiating the entrance, causing a hazard to traffic. There is ongoing damage to the road surface, which was not designed for such heavy traffic.
If traffic is not to increase on site, why is such a large building needed? If this building goes ahead, it will set a precedent for more industrial development.
Although the depot in Station Road has existing storing facilities, we dispute the statement that it is an industrial site.
We appreciate that gritting operations are necessary. Rather than constructing this monstrosity in this residential area, surely it is time to relocate these operations to another site where access would be easier, and disturbance less intrusive.
We hope readers will support us in objecting to these plans.
