There is a report in this week's Planning magazine that has a bearing on Sainsbury's planning application for a store in the Ryhall Road.
An inspector has turned down an application for an Asda store in South Wales because it has no direct pedestrian link with the town centre.

Its absence would encourage one stop shopping and have an adverse impact on the existing shops.

The Government is in favour of food stores in edge-of-centre locations.

No way does the Focus site meet this criterion.

The Government wants to encourage competition. With Morrisons, Somerfield, M&S and Lidl, isn't there enough competition for a small town?

Perhaps Sainsbury's reckons it will attract people from the villages who at present shop in Peterborough, Bourne or Oakham.

This would further increase the traffic through Stamford and do the town no favours at all.

King's Mill Lane,
Stamford
