Village road sign danger
Published Date:

As a couple who have stayed in Stamford every year since 1994 (yes, "Middlemarch" was the catalyst) my wife and I almost made our last ever visit when returning home to the North last week.
The reason? A massive and totally unexpected sign for Great Casterton placed virtually in the middle of the road and its position not entirely clear when approaching in the dark.
This is another example of traffic calming gone mad – why not just enforce the speed limit if there is a problem instead of creating the potential for a head-on crash?
Didn't the A1 actually pass though this village until the 1960s?
Why was there no problem then?
