Cantus Ensemble in Ketton
THE anniversaries of four major composers were celebrated at St Mary's church, Ketton at the weekend with a feast of orchestral and choral classics.
On Saturday the Cantus Ensemble was conducted by Barry Collet in works by Mendelssohn, Haydn, Handel and Purcell.
The following day Alwyn Pollard directed the Cantus Choir in music by the same quartet, with Debbie Bennett as soprano soloist.
Saturday's concert was notable for some fne playing by Stephen Foster in Haydn's trumpet concerto but the whole orchestra, which had the Rutland Sinfonia at its core, played brilliantly in Mendelsssohn's Hebrides overture, Handel's Royal Fireworks Music and, following pieces by Purcell, Haydn's emphatic Drum Roll symphony.
Horns Roger Swann, Roz Saunders and Dick Oldfield deserved their encore as did flautist Kristi Newton and trumpets Jan Wyndham Hall and Paul Dovey.
This was exceptional music making, matched by Sunday's performance of the same four composers with the choir's clarity and purity of tone producing an exceptional quality of sound in such works as Mendelassohn's Hear My Prayer.
