Mercury must - Operation Market Garden
SPANHOE airfield will return to its wartime glory days today with a 1940's nostalgia weekend.
Operation Market Garden is being held tomorrow and on Sunday to honour British, American and Polish World War II veterans with a parachute drop, battle re-enactments, an air show and a big band dance.
A Spitfire, a Dakota, a Mustang and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will take part in the air show and there will be living history displays, tank rides, stalls, refreshments and period entertainment tomorrow only from The Ockbrook Big Band and Lola Lamour.
A Saturday night dance will feature music by Ray McVay's Glenn Miller Orchestra. Tickets are needed for this – book on 01780 756862.
A remembrance service will be held on Sunday at 10am with the British Parachute Regiment Band and a flypast.
The airfield, sited between Laxton and Harringworth, was formerly home to the 315th troop carrier group who saw action on D-Day, the Rhine Crossing and in Operation Market Garden – a key initiative in Holland during 1944 that secured bridges to allow the rapid advancement of troops.
Any proceeds will be for the charities Help For Heroes, the Royal British Legion and the local air ambulance.
Day admission 10 (8), under 14s 5, 2+2 family 25. Camping available.
