A promotor who began booking gigs to raise funds for her roller derby team has secured a punk pioneer to headline a bill full of local bands.
Sophie Pallash, 27, from Stamford, booked her first gig at The Voodoo Lounge at Mama Liz’s in North Street, Stamford, to help out the Mean Valley Roller Girls.
The night - Live Fast, Die Punk - went so well that she was encouraged to carry on booking bands.
Tonight will be Sophie’s fourth gig at the venue and will be headlined by 999, pictured, one of the first wave of London punks and one of the UK’s longest-running punk bands.
They will be ably supported by Stamford favourites March To The Grave along with two more local punk bands, T-Bag and the Sugar Shakers and Don’t Look Down.
Sophie said: “I have always wanted to be in a band so it’s great to do something music-related.
“I’ve wanted to book March To The Grave for a while now. I am good friends with the band and we have been working together to try and arrange something a bit bigger for Stamford.
“We are all really looking forward to the gig and are enthusiastic about the bands.
“I am trying to get Stamford on the music ladder and give local bands a chance to support bigger acts.”
It was back in 1976 when 999 formed and with only a couple of lineup changes the band has been going strong ever since.
They are sure to attract a crowd and Sophie hopes that will bring some new fans to the supporting bands.
She added: “There will be many old-time punks who have been into it for years with a mix of younger fans.
“I’ve got a really good feeling about it. The venue is ideal for intimate and personal gigs. I would pick it over a bigger venue any day.”
While 999 will be playing a mix of hits from across their career, March To The Grave will be keen to get fans singing along to “I’m Too Fat”, which was recently released as a video.
The gig starts tonight at 8.30pm. Tickets have been snapped up quickly, but there will be a limited number on the door so be sure to get there early.
