The Scene: Characters combine for lively folk set
Pennyless: Les Wood, Penny Stevens and Graham Dale
A folk trio hope to bring some warmth to a winter afternoon with two hours of lively tunes.
Pennyless will perform at Mama Liz’s in North Street, Stamford, from 4pm until 6pm on Sunday.
Guitarist Les Woods, fiddle player Penny Stevens and multi-instrumentalist Graham Dale are halfway through a winter residency at the venue, playing Sunday afternoon sets every two weeks.
The trio recently released their third album and now have a varied repertoire which is guaranteed to perk up any audience.
Penny, from Bourne, said: “We play traditional music from Ireland, England, Scotland and the USA.
“We make medleys, rearrange tunes and add in extra things. We also compose our own songs.
“Our own music is more psychedelic folk, based on the sound of the 1970s. They tend to be strongly based on the English countryside and English characters.
“The set is very lively. We have a lot of fast tunes. We play jigs, bluegrass and morris tunes, so there is a lot of stomping.”
Pennyless formed about five years ago when Penny and Les were introduced over a glass of wine by Andy Croft, manager of the Cellar Bar at Stamford Arts Centre.
The pair began busking with the aim of having some fun and playing the music they loved but their lively performances soon gained a reputation and they were invited to play at Stamford’s Riverside Festival.
Graham joined to provide a range of extra instruments and two and a half years ago the band went full time.
They now play all over the region at a wide range of events, and have recorded three albums of covers and original songs.
Penny added: “We do everything from kitchen parties to festivals. We have gained a really good following.
“Last year we started putting on our own shows and we have had sell-out crowds, which is great.”
The trio often collaborates with other musicians and bands, many of whom have been invited to play at one of the winter shows at Mama Liz’s.
Penny said: “People can expect a performance of top quality traditional music played fast and furiously, as well as a whole range of quirky songs.
“Each is different because they reflect our different personalities. We are each very different but we come together well.”
Pennyless’ latest album, Tales from the Tulgey Wood, was released in the summer after a series of recording sessions at members’ homes and at Nepenthe Recording Studios in King’s Cliffe.
