THE possibility of revamp-ing part of Oakham will be investigated after a £40,000 grant was awarded.
The cash has been given to Oakham Town Partnership to fund a study into improvements for the west end of the town centre.
The area between the Wilkinson store and the railway crossing has been identified as a priority for improvement.
The cash boos
t from the East Midlands Development Agency will pay for professional consultants to carry out a feasibility study. The agency may then provide more cash to carry out the improvements.
Town partnership chairman Colonel Jim Weir said: "This is an exciting project which we trust will lead to a desirable regeneration of the west end of the town."
He said the plans would depend on the availability of funding.
The new town partnership committee, made up of councillors, business people and representatives from the community, has asked consultants from Savills to look at opportunities for the area.
Ideas will then be reported back to the town and county councils and residents to draw up the best scheme for Oakham.
Col Weir, a former chairman of Rutland County Council and vice-Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, was selected as the partnership's chairman at a meeting last month.
The 12-strong committee will continue to oversee projects like the farmers' and continental markets, craft fairs and events at Victoria Hall with the help of a sub-group.
The aim of the committee is to make sure the town remains an attractive place for people to live, work and play.
