A TEENAGER who carried on skiing when she started losing her sight has been selected for the British Disabled Ski Team's youth squad.
Jade Etherington, 17, relies on her father Andrew to be here eyes as he guides her around some of the world's fastest ski slopes – talking her over every lump and bump as she whizzes 10ft behind him.
Coaches are now preparing Jade for glory in the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.
Jade is one of four young hopefuls in the squad and is currently on a strict training schedule so she can make the grade.
Dad Andrew, 37, from Deeping St James, said he never worries about her toppling over.
He said: "Jade will be skiing in four different disciplines, including slalom and giant slalom.
"I ski the course directly in front of Jade.
"I instruct her via the radio, and tell her whether she needs to go left or right and if she will be going over any bumps.
"Downhill, there is no anticipation, so I have to describe how far to turn, and whether there are any jumps or turns.
"I'm not nervous for her, only me. She's more competent and if anyone is likely to fall over, it's me."
Jade suffers from glaucoma as a result of Axenfeld's Syndrome, a condition which affects about 400 people in the country.
It is a genetic condition, and Jade's mother Amber, 38, who is blind, has it, and two of the couple's four children also have sight problems.
But Mrs Etherington said she would never stop the teenager pursuing her dream.
Jade's eyesight started detioriating 18 months ago, but her mum says the skiing is the silver line to this dark cloud.
She said: "Skiing is something positive that has come out of it, because she wouldn't have got into the squad if her eyesight was what it was before."
Jade said: "It's really good to have the support at home and on the slope. Dad knows how I'll react and we have our own code.
"It can be quite scary because I don't see the gates until they come past.
"But it's exciting to get down the slope and not fall over."
