A NURSE who had hoped to take part in a 1,700 mile motorbike ride to raise money for charity has been forced to pull out.
Paul Smart, of Viking Way, Thurlby, set off on the Barry Sheene Memorial Run on Friday. The trip started as planned at the Brands Hatch race circuit in Kent, but by Friday evening he was forced to pull out after contracting Gastroenteritis.
He said
he was disappointed at the way his dream trip ended.
"It didn't go too well and I contracted this bug. Being a nurse I knew straight away what it was and I just couldn't keep anything down.
"I am absolutely gutted to have had to pull out. I was so looking forward to the whole experience," said Paul.
Paul, 51, who works as a deputy charge nurse at Peterborough's NHS Walk-in centre, is planning to reclaim his travel costs through insurance and donate it to children's cancer charity Clic Sargent, who would have received his sponsorship money.
Paul said he hoped to take part in the next fundraising motorcycle ride.
He said: "I've got the first refusal on the chance to take part in next year's ride. I'm so disappointed."
The trip, which he was completing on his Harley Davidson motorbike, would have seen him travel through France taking in several race circuits, before finishing the journey in Spain. Sycamore Harley Davidson of Uppingham had provided a service free of charge before he set off.
