Crowds flock to see birds
A WOODLAND activity day drew in crowds of ornithologists both young and old.
The bank holiday weekend kicked off with an early morning walk at Fineshade Wood to hear the dawn chorus.
Event organiser Chris Andrews said: “We had about 35 people who got here for 5.30am to hear the dawn chorus. There were some interesting birds to see and hear and everyone really enjoyed it.”
The early morning walk was followed by the RSPB activity day at Top Lodge. More than 200 people went along to take part in the free activities and learn about the projects that are running at Fineshade Wood.
Visitors learned to dissect owl pellets and made bird boxes to take home.
Mr Andrews said: “Everyone really enjoyed the day. We did presentations on wildlife photography and tips on birdwatching. Birdwatching is something that anyone can do.
“I think people really liked making their own bird boxes to take home.
“The aim of the day was to showcase what we do and a lot of people said they didn’t know we were here and would come back again.”
The next bank holiday weekend will coincide with Red Kite week at Top Lodge at Fineshade Wood.
The week will include talks and presentations about the reintroduction of the kites to the area and a family fun day will take place on May 25 and 26 from 11am to 3pm.
Top Lodge is on the A43 between Stamford and Corby.
