FIREMEN tackling a car fire were held up after being unable to access water from a hydrant because it had been covered over in tarmac.
The incident happened at about 12.30am yesterday in Cambridge Road, Stamford, and involved a
Rover 75.
When firefighters tried to access a hydrant in the road they were forced to use screwdrivers to dig through the tarmac and open it up for water supplies. In the end they were able to use water from the engine instead to put out the blaze.
George Gough, 56, of Edinburgh Road, saw the firefighters struggle with the hydrant. He said: "They had to dig it out and it took about five minutes. It's a major worry – if it had been a house fire someone could have lost their life in that time."
