Animal Helpline Dog Rescue currently has more than 50 abandoned pets taken in from Stamford, Bourne, the Deepings and Rutland and with more dogs than kennels it is desperate to boost its caring facilities.
Public donations of £3,000 have secured the Wansford centre's future. But it still needs another £7,000 to realise its dream of providing a new kennel block. It is preparing to unveil a series of fundraising events to push forward the appeal and raise awareness of its work.
Volunteer Marie Tyler, of Belgrave Road in Uppingham, sees the benefit of the organisation firsthand when she regularly visits the site to clean and care for the dogs – many of which may have arrived abused or neglected.
"It can be quite touching and upsetting when these dogs come in and they're in a bad way, but by the time they leave to go to loving homes they have their tails in the air," she said.
The centre, which is based off the A47, has been operating for 30 years to provide stray dogs with a place to turn their lives around.
Volunteers help keep the sanctuary going and various helpers based in south Lincolnshire and Rutland care for dogs and puppies before they can find a long-term stable home.
More helpers are being sought and Marie says she hopes people will consider getting involved with a worthwhile cause, either by caring for pets or simply giving up a few hours to assist at the centre.
She said: "It's so rewarding to see the dogs get a loving home after what they may have been though."
