HOSPITAL services in Rutland are in line for a major shake-up.
Health chiefs are looking at building a new health facility in the grounds of Rutland Memorial Hospital that could include Oakham Medical Practice, the GPs' surgery.
Leicestershire and Rutland Primary Care Trust set up a working group to look at community hospitals and services in the two counties.
The group is proposing that more patients recover at home or in care homes with health and social care support rather than in hospital beds.
It is also proposing an expansion of outpatient services, an increase in day cases, and an expansion of diagnostics such as X-rays.
It says the services could be provided by reorganising services in the existing hospital or in a new building.
Don McGeorge, director of Oakham Medical Practice and a member of the working group, said: "Although the opportunity to build a health facility including our medical practice is a strong possibility, the fact is that this is subject to stringent financial and clinical needs assessment and is most certainly not a foregone conclusion to the work of the group.
"Ultimately the most important factors will be the retention and further development of the medical facilities already available to the Rutland population, ensuring that they are fit to meet the needs of an expanding patient base for the future."
Geoffrey Onslow, co-chairman of health watchdog Leicestershire County and Rutland Patient Forum said: "People should look at what is being proposed and I think by and large there is much to recommend it.
"There are many positive aspects to it which would benefit patients, particularly in rural areas like Rutland. "
Dr Hugh Rees, county council cabinet portfolio holder for adult social care and health, broadly welcomed the proposals, saying: "I am excited and encouraged by positive improvements in out-patients' day care proposals. It is important rehabilitation and palliative care is provided in Rutland for all. And Rutland Memorial Hospital is best placed to provide these services."
A trust spokesman said: "The working group has considered how care could be provided in the future and believes that a rebuild of a health facility, to include co-location of the Oakham Medical Practice, would be the favoured approach.
"Realisation of this will need to be subject to patient activity and financial modelling and, if there is a sound case for a new build, the securing of appropriate funding."
At present the GPs surgery is alongside the hospital in Cold Overton Way.

Final proposals are expected by the end of the year. Any major changes will be subject to public consultation.
