CUSTOMERS will soon be saying goodbye to a longstanding Bourne business.
TR Carlton, in Abbey Road, has been meeting the DIY needs of people in the town for more than 50 years.
But on Thursday, July 31, the shop will be closing its doors for the final time.
Owner Malcolm Boggitt has been a familiar face behind the counter since 1962, when he took over from his father-in-law Thomas Carlton, selling timber and tools. Three years ago he introduced fishing tackle to the store.
The 68-year-old plans to go into semi-retirement but will be keeping his hand in as a trader by opening up a smaller shop in Abbey Road selling solely fishing tackle.
He will also be enjoying more time fishing and gardening.
Mr Boggitt, who lives in Beach Avenue with his wife Ann, 69, said: "I will miss it. It has been interesting. You meet some nice customers and we are sorry to lose them.
"I would like to thank them for all the years they have been dealing with us."
TR Carlton has been a firm fixture in Abbey Road since the mid 1950s when it was founded by Mrs Boggitt's father.
In its heyday the business included a vehicle bodyshop and undertakers, which the family sold on three years ago.
Mr Boggitt said: "We have seen a lot of changes. There is a lot of estate agents with all the little shops gone and charity shops taking over, which doesn't help the genuine retailer."
It is hoped that TR Carlton undertakers will be taking over the shop.
