AN estate agent will tackle a 10k run on Sunday to support a charity which helped a little girl in her battle against leukaemia.
Alex Neal, 38, will be taking part in the Langtoft 10k road run in aid of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, for the support it has given to his friend’s daughter, eight-year-old Lauryn Atkinson.
Lauryn, a pupil at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy, was diagnosed with leukaemia when she was just five. During her treatment, Lauryn and her family were given support, help and advice by the charity.
Her family and friends have since raised more than £10,000 as a thank you and Alex’s run is one of a number of events being held this year.
Alex, who works at Rosedale Property Agents in Market Deeping and who lives in Meadowgate, Bourne, said: “I’ve known Lauryn and her family for a long time and I’m just looking to help in anyway I can. To see what she’s been through just gives me such drive and motivation to do something like this.
“I’m hoping to raise £500 for the charity but I’m really just looking for as much support as I can.”
Lauryn finished her treatment 20 months but is still having clinical appointments in her remission period of five years.
Lauryn’s mum Claire Lees said: “The support we’ve been given from the charity has been a tower of strength and we can’t thank them enough for their help and advice.
“We really wanted to raise money for them so they can offer the same support to others who are suffering and we’re very grateful that Alex said he wanted to run for Lauryn and the charity.
“It was horrendous when we found she had leukaemia. She missed so much school because she spent so much of her time in hospital because of the treatment. It really was horrendous but now we’re just waiting for the five year all clear.”
Lauryn said: “It’s really nice he’s doing it for me. He’s running a long way and I’m going along to support him and I will cheer him on.”
The race is an annual event which sees participants run through the villages of Langtoft, Greatford and Barholm.
Alex, who has coached and played tennis semi-professionally, said: “I’m just going to give it a go. I’ve left it a little late on the training front but I’ve done cross country running before so I’m not too worried. I’m hoping to run it in under an hour.”
In August, Alex is set to take to the skies for a charity skydive. He has been sponsored by family and friends, as well as a number of local businesses including Double and Megson Solicitors, Classic Fireplaces, Cycle Wright and his employers Rosedale Property Agents.
Sunday’s 10k run begins starts at 10.15am in West End, Langtoft. There is also a 3k run through the village, starting at 11am. Runners can turn up and register on the day.
