ORGANISERS of the biggest tourist event in Rutland have said they are hoping for a record breaking year when the figures are published later this week.
Thousands of people from all over the world descended on the county for Birdfair 2011 which was held at Rutland Water Nature Reserve, Egleton, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Hotels, restaurants and pubs in and around Oakham thrived from the wealth of multi-cultural visitors making the most of their time in the county.
Co-organiser Tim Appleton from the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust said: “It was a fantastic weekend and we’re hoping to have had record numbers of attendance and record amounts of money raised.
“I would like to pay tribute to all the volunteers that put in so many hours and so much effort over the weekend.”
This year’s event was raising money for a Birdlife project to protect migratory birds using the three main migratory paths across Europe, Africa, America and Australasia.
