Warm weather brought record-breaking crowds to the 184th Rutland County Show on Sunday.

Now in it’s third year at the Rutland Showground, off the Oakham bypass, show organiers were thrilled with the huge numbers who enjoyed the traditional event.

During the busiest period, between 11am and 1pm, it took drivers some time to get into the ground but once there, there was plenty of parking and dozens of shows to
enjoy.

Highlights included cattle, sheep and equine show classes and dog and duck shows.

New for this year was the Leicester County Poultry Show, bringing chickens to the show for the first time.

The tractor pulling proved particularly popular again with children and the families gathering four deep to watch.

The Local Larder area was expanded this year to include more regional artisan foods and people hungrily tucked into a tasty meal or enjoyed a picnic they’d brought from home in the grounds.

Show director Emma Dodds said: “It was absolutely amazing - we had record breaking numbers through the gates.

“A lot of lessons had been learnt from the past couple of years but we still have lessons to learn, like getting people more quickly into the showground, and we apologise for any inconvenience.

“The beautiful thing is that lots of people were saying that it was just like the traditional country shows in the past and we really heard nothing but positive comments.

“Obviously we are 80 per cent weather dependant and this year, we were so lucky with the sun. There was a lovely breeze blowing through.

“We had expanded our vintage vehicle ring and that was really popular and the minute people came through the gates they were coming through modern tractors to give it that traditional show feeling from the very beginning.

“There was a brilliant atmosphere and I really couldn’t be more delighted with how it all went.”
