Road works in Tallington will be completed on Saturday - a week ahead of schedule.

A 200-meter stretch of Main Road had been closed to traffic since Monday last week to allow National Grid contractors to replace ageing gas pipes close to the railway level crossing.

Traffic was diverted through outlying villages for the duration.

The spokesman for National Grid said: “Essential work to keep gas flowing to homes and businesses in Tallington for decades to come is due to be finished by this weekend, a week ahead of schedule.

“Pipe replacement work in Main Road is expected to be completed tonight (Wednesday), after engineers worked over the weekend. Reinstatement of the road is expected to be completed by Saturday.”

Angry residents had berated the company for not consulting local residents about the plans or giving motorists sufficient notice of the planned works.

Ken Otter, neighbourhood watch coordinator and former parish councillor said: “We’re pleased the work will finish earlier than scheduled, because it has been a nightmare. It was badly planned.

“Despite 4,000 people a day being affected there was no consultation or advance warning.”

A spokesman for National Grid said: “We are sorry if residents feel they had not been sufficiently consulted.

“Letters were sent to residents and businesses, with businesses on Main Road receiving a follow-up visit.

“The parish council was notified and the works were advertised by Lincolnshire County Council; however, we will look to see how we can improve our processes.”
