Staff at a convenience store are celebrating 30 successful years in business.

The Spar shop in Godsey Lane, Market Deeping, was opened in 1984 by owners Amrit and Manjula Mistry.

The family-run shop quickly became a familiar spot for pupils at the nearby Market Deeping Community Primary and William Hildyard Primary Schools to call on their way home.

Mr Mistry, who did not come from a retail background, said business was tough for the first two years. But the shop won Spar Retailer of the Year award in 1987 and has developed a loyal customer base since then.

The store survived the recent recession and the opening of a large Tesco supermarket in the same street.

Mr Mistry said: “Within the area we have a fairly strong customer base. And hopefully we have a fairly good reputation as well.”

The shop has also been involved in the Rotary Club of the Deepings and Deepings Raft Race.
