A landlord hopes to create a welcoming atmosphere for older customers at his town centre pub.
The Griff Inn in Northgate, Oakham, has been taken over by The Steaming Billy Brewing Company. It has been refurbished and reopened under its original name, The Three Crowns.
Manager Jeff Fraine said: “I want to attract the 40 to 70-year-olds and get back to how pubs were in the 60s and 70s.”
The Three Crowns serves ploughman’s lunches and has a wide selection of real ales, wines and spirits.
Jeff, a former coach driver, has invested in a number of chess and Scrabble boards to encourage his customers to play traditional pub games and hopes to introduce a darts team into the summer league.
He has launched open mic nights on Wednesdays with an invitation for musicians to “rock up and play” and will also be hosting live jazz music with The New Orleans Hotshots every Wednesday lunchtime between 12.30pm and 2.30pm from February 12.
Jeff, 61, said: “People have been amazed by the transformation at the pub. All the neighbours are starting to come back in and have said it is a much friendlier place to be.”
