A convenience store will be ready to welcome customers through its doors today (Friday).

The Co-operative will be opening at the former Horseshoe Inn site in Braunston Road, Oakham.

The development has created 18 jobs in the store. The shop will offer a wide range of food and drink, as well as an in-store bakery, cash machine and car park.

More than 600 locals signed a petition to keep the pub open when Leicestershire brewery Everards announced plans it was closing it.

Also in Oakham, Italian restaurant Wildwood opened in High Street on Sunday.

The chain moved into the premises previously occupied by Furleys furniture store. It offers freshly made pizzas, pastas and grilled dishes along with a children’s menu. The opening has created 20 jobs.

In Uppingham, friends Ellie Marshall and Nikki Thorpe opened women’s clothes shop Twist and Turn.

Its door opened in High Street on Friday last week, following a launch evening on Thursday.

Specialising in women’s fashion, Nikki said the pair jumped at the chance to open the store. She said: “It’s something we wanted to get involved with for a long time and when the opportunity came up to put our own spin on ladies’ fashion it was just too good to miss.”
