Couple’s plea to flush away sewage problem

A couple whose lives have been blighted by sewage bursting through their drains have appealed for a solution to their problems.
Mervyn and Sue McFarland have had to deal with overflowing drains in their home in Creeton Road, Little Bytham, for more than 20 years.
Every time there is a spell of heavy rain in the area, raw sewage comes up through the manhole covers and drains in their street.
And to make matters worse, the problem often makes its way into the couple’s house.
The issue returned with the heavy rain over Christmas and was at its worst on January 2. The couple have complained multiple times to Anglian Water.
Mrs McFarland, 70, said: “Over the Christmas period, we and our neighbours were flooded with sewage, coming up our drains, and the combined sewer in the road was discharging raw sewage which was flowing into the River Glen.
“We were unable to flush our toilets or use the shower - quite a problem with family staying over the holiday - and we had raw sewage floating past the front door.”
Mr McFarland, 67, has installed valves to protect his home from sewage. He said: “It is a long-standing problem in Little Bytham. I believe it is a Victorian pipe. A pump forces sewage down a small pipe. It needs modernising.”
Since the heavy rains over Christmas, Anglian Water has been investigating the problem.
Spokesman Antony Innes said: “We appreciate how frustrating the intermittent drainage problems in Little Bytham have been for customers over recent years.
“Anglian Water is committed to do what we can to resolve this issue and work with those customers affected.
“We do recognise that more work is needed across the whole village and now that water levels have dropped, following the recent flooding all across our region, we will be investigating this issue further to see what additional work can be done to reduce this risk.”
