Two major high street retailers are set to close.

Staff at Dorothy Perkins and Burton in High Street, Stamford, have been telling customers the stores will be closing on February 3.

The Mercury understands that interviews with staff about redundancy have been taking place in both shops.

A spokesman for Arcadia, which owns both the retailers, would not confirm the news.

She said: “I can confirm that no announcements have been made with regards to this store closing.”

President of Stamford Chamber of Trade and Commerce Tim Lee said the closure was typical of the retail scene.

He added: “Large businesses seem to be thinning down their retail premises. It is not good for the high street but we do notice that shops don’t take that long to fill the space.

“You see a lot of businesses open and close in Stamford and I am optimistic that it won’t take long to fill that space.

“It is tough but people are spending money. Stamford’s high street will still be here in five year’s time.”
