RAF Wittering hosted a top-secret operation with a twist as pop star Ellie Goulding filmed her latest video there.

The singer and 180 extras spent a full day shooting her new single “Burn” at the base last month.

The need for secrecy was paramount and few of the servicemen and women based at Wittering knew about the filming until the day it took place.

Commanding Officer at RAF Wittering, Group Captain Damian Alexander, said: “We were delighted to be able to facilitate this project and it was a pleasure to meet Ellie and some of the production team.

“As you can imagine, trying to keep the arrival of an international pop star and 180 extras secret was extremely challenging, particularly when you consider our personnel are trained to be observant of the unusual.

“The Wittering team did a great job in their usual professional manner and I know their efforts were really appreciated by the production team.”

As the shoot developed the production team from Nothing To See Here London saw opportunities to enhance the video with the help of personnel and equipment from the base.

Producer Sean Stuart said: “The shoot went like clockwork. We had a very ambitious plan for what we intended to do at very short notice.

“As hardened filmmakers we are all still reeling from the ‘can do’ attitude we experienced at Wittering. We were quite amazed at the extra help and facilities we were given. Without their help our film would not have been possible”.

Flight Lieutenant Don Earl, who managed the event, worked closely with Ellie on the day.

He said: “It was an absolute pleasure; she is a very hard working and courteous lady who surprised me by taking the time to meet the RAF personnel assisting on the day, despite her busy schedule.”

But the biggest surprise of the day came for Flt Lt Earl’s daughter Rachel, who found herself chatting to Ellie when the star called her father’s phone whilst he was driving.

Rachel said: “It was amazing - we chatted for about five minutes. She asked me how school was and what I wanted to do as a career; she was so friendly and down to earth.

“I can’t wait to see the video.”

The single will be released on August 11 but the video can be seen on YouTube.
