Garage theme for The Jubilee revamp in Bourne

A PUB will close for a huge revamp and will reopen with a new name.

The Jubilee in North Street, Bourne, will close on Sunday, February 26, for a five-week refurbishment.

The pub, which is owned by Michael Thurlby, will have a garage-themed bar when it reopens on Friday, April 6, which is Good Friday.

The pub will also revert to a former name – Jubilee Garage.

Operations manager Ross Dykes said the refit was in line with the group’s aim to refit its pubs regularly.

Mr Thurlby also owns Smiths in Bourne, as well as The Periwig, The Tobie Norris and The Crown Hotel in Stamford, The Lord Nelson in Oakham, The White Hart in Ufford and The Exeter Arms in Easton-on-the-Hill.

Mr Dykes said: “There are a couple of things that prompted the refit. It has not been refitted for six years so it is due. The Periwig was done about four years ago and we like to keep them up to date.

“We also decided to make it more of a pub so it has a bit of an identity. At the moment it’s a restaurant during the day, a pub in the evening and a nightclub at night and the upstairs doesn’t get used during the day.”

As part of the revamp, there will be a new stairwell through the centre of the building to the first floor.

On the first floor there will be a 1970s Volkswagen camper van as the bar and other garage features will include garage signage, petrol pumps and vehicle seating.

The pub will also be showing Sky Sports with six new television screens and a new family orientated menu will be introduced.

A garage from the 1920s to 1950s, the building has inspired the new theme.

Mr Dykes said: “We want to turn it into more of a venue for families, which can be used all day. The menu will be very different from what it is now. We need to make it into a sustainable value for money pub.

“We are conscious that people are spending less nowadays and that will be reflected in the refit.”

Mr Dykes said he hoped people would appreciate the revamp.

He said: “I think it is a quirky idea and I hope people will like what we are trying to do.”

Meanwhile, the Pack Horse pub in Northborough reopened last week under new temporary managers Mac and Val Hirst.

The pub was closed for a fortnight after pub regular Tom Sharp, 71, alleged he was thrown out for speaking German.

When police arrived to investigate, they found the lack of CCTV coverage contravened its licence.
