Neighbours object to two-shop plan in Market Deeping

RESIDENTS have slammed plans to build shops next to their homes, saying they will take thousands off the value of their properties.

New River Retail wants to build two non-food retail units in The Precincts off Godsey Lane, Market Deeping. One would be built on the site of the former R F Witt & Sons printing works, with the other on the car park bordering Thyme Avenue.

Both units would have an internal height of about 20ft, with an average floor space of 9,000sq ft.

The developer has submitted a planning application to South Kesteven District Council but residents living in Thyme Avenue are worried the new units will take up to £10,000 off the value of their homes.

Adrienne Hudson said: “My house is right next to the application site. When it was submitted in March New River Retail said it was going to be one storey, not very big.

“But we have the plans now and it’s a huge building. It will overshadow our houses because at the moment we look out at nothing.”

Mrs Hudson’s mother-in-law Sheila Hudson, who lives two doors down, added: “I was looking at selling my house and moving somewhere smaller. But I can’t sell it if that is there.

“Even if they don’t build it the permission will be there. There are empty shops on the High Street that could be used instead.”

Keith McClelland, also of Thyme Avenue, e-mailed a copy of a letter he sent to the district council about the application to the Mercury.

In it, he says the new shops would increase noise and pollution levels near his home and building on the car park would take away a much-used community meeting point.

Paul Briggs, a partner at Market Deeping estate agents Briggs Residential, added: “While the application is in, because of the uncertainty of how it will affect nearby homes it will put the price back £10,000 and will make them harder to sell.

“From a buyer’s point of view it’s nice to know what’s going to happen around you. Because you can’t see what the shops are going to look like there is an element of uncertainty.”

But New River Retail director Nick Sewell said the shops would benefit the Deepings.

He said: “We have been as sympathetic as we can to any adjoining residents. We are looking to invest in improving facilities in their town.

“We have engaged with the planners and taken their recommendations, and have consulted with the community about what they would like to see here.”

Mr Sewell said it was too early to confirm what kind of retailers would take on the new units.
