Plans for Stamford Brewing Company have been axed
PLANS to open a micro-brewery in Stamford have been axed.
Business partners Michael Thurlby and Simon Raines had planned to open Stamford Brewing Company at the former tyre and exhaust centre in St Leonard’s Street, Stamford.
But they have ditched the plans, saying the site was unsuitable and have now put in a planning application to revamp an industrial premises in The Arena, off Roman Bank in Bourne for the brewery.
It was used by a label manufacturer and is currently empty.
They say they have outgrown their premises at Ufford Ales, which is based at The White Hart in Ufford.
The plans to open the brewery in Stamford were ditched at the end of last year and Mr Thurlby has also submitted an application to turn the brewery into a retail premises.
Mr Raines, head brewer at Ufford Ales, said: “After we got planning permission last June for the brewery in Stamford, we found that there were a couple of things that weren’t right with the premises and we decided not to go ahead with it.
“We are looking at leasing the premises in Bourne.
“This is an application for a change of use whereas the premises in Stamford had that, so it is more complicated.
“The Stamford one wasn’t sustainable but hopefully this one will be.”
The pair had previously told the Mercury that the Stamford brewery could have created up to five jobs and would have produced three core ales, as well as including a shop and a visitor centre.
Mr Raines, who lives in Bourne, said it was “still early days” and wouldn’t say how many jobs the brewery in Bourne could create.
He said: “I don’t know if the application will be approved but if it is successful, we will decide where to go from there.”
Mr Thurlby, who was unavailable for comment, already owns the Jubilee and Smiths pubs, both in North Street, Bourne.
He also owns two pubs and a hotel in Stamford, The White Hart in Ufford, The Lord Nelson in Oakham in Rutland, The Exeter Arms in Easton-on-the-Hill and a pub in Newark in Nottinghamshire.
