A village post office has reopened in a new location.

RAF Wittering personnel joined shoppers and Post Office staff for the opening of the counter at the Spar shop in St George’s Road on Monday.

Wing Commander Lizzy Nicholl, pictured above, cut the ribbon and a queue soon formed as people sent Christmas cards and presents around the country.

Wing Commander Nicholl said: “It’s not every day you’re asked to open a Post Office, so this has been a unique experience; but I think it’s right that we recognise the service given by (former postmasters) David and Debra Standish-Leigh to the village.”

Mr Standish-Leigh said: “In a way it’s sad; I’m the last postmaster and there has been one in Wittering since 1923. It was a big commitment, but Debra and I are both looking forward to a break.”

The new counter is open from 7.30am until 9pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 8pm on Saturday and Sunday.
