A Rutland-resident who has been perfecting the art of baking from a young age, has recently set up his own pie making business in Oakham.
Ian Curtis, head pie maker at The Rutland Pie Company, first started baking aged 11-years-old at the village bakery in Langham, a place where he still lives today, aged 49.
Ian spent most of his time working at the bakery, until its closure in the mid 80s, from which he then moved to Hopcrofts and then onto Morrisons in Stamford.
Most recently he worked as a pie maker at Northfield Farm.
“I had never spent a great deal of time making pies, I had always grown up making bread,” said Ian.
“But in that first year at Northfield we received a Silver for both my Melton Mowbray Pork Pie and my Cornish Pasty at the National Pie Awards in Melton, competing with some of the biggest producers in the country.”
Now, using his skills to produce his own pies for The Rutland Pie Company, which is financed by a silent partner, Ian is in his element and is thankful of the business opportunity that has come his way.
From tasty meat pies, to gluten free pies and dessert pies - all of Ian’s handmade pies, made from local ingredients, are available to purchase online.
