A WOMAN is calling on people who support the Riverside Festival to sign a petition.
Lucy Slessor has started an online petition calling for the festival to be reinstated, after organisers decided to cancel this year’s event.
Lucy, who lives in Stamford, said: “The festival has just grown and grown over the years and people come from all over the place to attend. It’s an amazing community event and one of the best events in Stamford.
“I set the petition up because I don’t think Stamford Town Council are listening to the strength of feeling there is in the town and hopefully this will make them rethink.
“I don’t think there is time now to organise the festival for this year but maybe it will make a difference for the Riverside next year.”
The online petition asks people to sign it if they would like to show their support in bringing back the event. So far, 121 people have signed.
Lucy will hand the petition to the town council.
Festival organisers decided to cancel the event last month because they couldn’t reach an agreement with Stamford Town Council over use of The Meadows, which is where the event is held, possible admission fee for the event and a grant application.
Jenny Collins, one of the event’s directors, said the petition wouldn’t make any difference to this year’s event.
She said: “There isn’t time now to organise this year’s event but whether this petition will make any difference to 2012 and beyond, we will have to wait and see. We continue to make inquiries about potential sites for next year.
“We were all incredibly disappointed to have to cancel the event this year but it is heartening that there is that support for the event.”
Town clerk Patricia Stuart-Mogg said she wasn’t aware of the petition and would investigate it further before the town council commented.
A group has also been set up on social networking website Facebook called Bring back Stamford Festival, which has more than 100 followers.
