TEDDIES on zipwires, Stamford Town Band and the Archdeacon of Lincoln helped launch a mammoth fundraising campaign for Uffington Church on Sunday.

Parishioners need £170,000 to repair the chancel roof and the weekend’s event was to raise awareness plus the first £1,500 for the fund.

There were church tours, tower trips and a quiz while children’s teddy bears zipwired from parapet to churchyard. Organist Tim Grace displayed copies of services he has accompanied over 30 years. Children’s games, a barbecue and tombola were held on the school field. The Venerable Tim Barker cut a ribbon to launch the event and a Songs of Praise service ended it.

Gail Genever, one of the organisers, said it had been a big success and they were very pleased with the total raised which included some generous donations.

“We’re expecting it to take around three years to raise the money,” she said.
