THE first of what could be a new series of car boot sales was held in Oakham on Saturday.

A group of Voluntary Action Rutland transport volunteers organised the event which was held in the car park at the Rutland Volunteer Centre in Lands’ End Way.

It attracted 22 sellers. Donations on the gate and refreshment sales resulted in £230 being raised for VAR.

Organiser June Beadle said they were very pleased as they had aimed for £200.

“It was a bit trial and error but it went very well. People came in waves and several asked us when we’ll be having the next one. We think monthly would be too much. We’re thinking of October, after work on the car park has finished,” she said.

Transport volunteers have always had a chosen charity but due to a cut in funding for VAR this year have decided the money is needed there. Other helpers were Gerry Beadle, Peter and Ivy Hart and Sherrie and Tom Collins.
