An 11-year-old who was “not keen on running, cycling or swimming” has been bitten by the triathlon bug after taking part in Tata Steel’s Kids of Steel event.

Thomas Bretton competed with pupils from Ketton Primary School last year and in May, joined the Ketton Panthers - the local junior triathlon club.

He said: “Since then I’ve been doing the club’s swimming, running and cycling sessions.”

Mum Helen said: “I was a parent of a cautious 10 year old who wasn’t particularly keen on running, cycling or swimming. He left home for the Kids of Steel event last year very apprehensively – but returned chuffed-to-bits with himself and what he’d done. I didn’t know what it would lead to.”
