KATHARINE (Anne) Cliff, of Newtown Road, Uppingham, well-known resident and much loved and highly respected teacher, died unexpectedly at Peterborough City Hospital, aged 65.
She was born in Stamford the eldest of four daughters and was educated at Stamford High School, leaving in 1963.
Her first job was on Garden News at the Stamford Mercury and later she worked at C & G Concrete in Stamford.
Anne had known Robert Cliff since the time her family lived in Lyddington.
They were married on August 7, 1965, in Stamford and moved to Uppingham. At this point Anne worked in the offices of Arnold Wills.
Their elder son, Tony, was born in 1966 and their younger son David in 1968.
Her urge to care for and teach young people led her to become a classroom assistant at Leighfield Primary School.
Anne did voluntary work at the King’s Mill children’s centre in Stamford and was Arkela for the Cubs group in Uppingham.
She did her teaching training at the Nene College in Corby, taught at Fosse Infants School, Leicester for a number of years, then moved to Cottesmore Primary School on the RAF base, where she taught until her retirement.
She rose to become deputy head, then acting head, and was also a teacher governor there.
Since her retirement in 2004, Anne filled her time with every possible occupation. She ran the Burghley Race for Life in 2005 and 2006 for Cancer Research.
She was a member of Oakham Decorative and Fine Arts Society and this year took on responsibility for Rutland Schools Young Arts exhibition at Catmose College, which was a great success.
She belonged to Rutland Flower Club, enjoyed painting and she and her husband played golf regularly at Luffenham Heath Golf Club, where she was match and competitions secretary.
The celebration for her life took place at St Peter and St Pau’s Church, Uppingham.
Bereaved are her husband, two sons and grandchildren, Charlie, Sam, Ellie, Ollie and Billy, as well as wider family and many friends.
